A tsunami alert has been issued after the southwestern Japanese cost of okinawa has been reportedly hit by an earthquake of 6.9 magnitude. BBC reports that earlier the measure was given at 7.3 by the US Geological Survey. But since the japan Meteorological Agency has changed it to 6.9. It struck at 0531 (2031 GMT), 84km (52 miles) east of Naha, on the island of okinawa, 29km (18 miles) below the seabed, Reuters news agency reports. Waves of up to two metres are apprehended in a few areas. The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center, however, has informed that “No destructive widespread tsunami threat exists based on historical earthquake and tsunami data.” (Source: Wall Street Journal) The country of japan is most vulnerable to earthquakes and is no stranger to quakes beyond the magnitude of six. In October 2004, Niigata region in northern japan suffered from a 6.8-magnitude quake which left 65 people dead and more than 3000 injured. 7.3 earthquake rattles Okinawa Japan! Bigger and badder than Haiti!
Source: www.entertainmentandshowbiz.com --- Friday, February 26, 2010
okinawa, the extreme southwestern portion of japan’s four main islands has been struck by an earthquake of a humongous magnitude of 7.3 in the rector scale. Japanese officials have issued beach evacuation orders immediately as they don’t want to take chance with a possible upcoming tsunami. (CNN) Update: CNN’s breaking news flash has just been updated and it shows the earthquake to be a 7.0 instead of the earlier reported 7.3. In both cases, it seems that japan has been hit hard. Though the Japanese building are very well equipped to handle earthquakes unlike the Haitian buildings, a quake with a magnitude of 7 might just rattle well equipped earthquake proof buildings as well . No further news about the quake has been caught hold of yet but we are waiting anxiously to provide more update on it as soon as possible. It seems that there is something terribly wrong with the whole world. At one side we have the Haitian earthquake, at another the never ending snow in America and now the earthquake in Asia, japan. Japan Defense Minister: U.S. Marines Should Stay in Okinawa
Source: www.pacificnewscenter.com --- Monday, February 22, 2010
Guam--Guam is not a good place to relocate the Futenma Air Base. That the sentiment of japan’s Defense Minister Toshimi Kitazawa. The japan Times reports today that Kitazawa suggests he is opposed to transferring all U.S. Marines stationed in okinawa to Guam , saying the 18,000-strong contingent in the prefecture plays a "very important role" in preventing conflicts in the region”. At a political rally yesterday, Kitazawa said that the presence of U-S Marines in okinawa has been a deterrent against China. He says "Chinese submarines have been frequently navigating around Japanese islands in the sea area covering Kagoshima, okinawa and Taiwan. japan and the United States believes that allowing encroachment by China into the area would endanger the peace and security of the entire Asia-Pacific region”. The report says Kitazawa said japan should never create a vacuum in the area. “If all the marines in okinawa are transferred to Guam, we cannot defend those islands”. Kitazawa asked the government task force to present alternative candidate sites by the end of this month so japan and the United States can find a solution to the relocation issue by the end of May. ...
